What is an early pregnancy scan?
An early pregnancy, also referred to as viability or dating scan is performed from 6 weeks of pregnancy. It will confirm a pregnancy, its viability and establish an estimated due date. The scan is available to all women, and particularly recommended where there has been pain, bleeding or history of complications in previous pregnancies.
It is not normally available on NHS which is an added reason why our team at the Clinic strives to offer the best care and reassurance to our patients during this initial stage of their pregnancy.

How is the early scan done?
The scan is usually performed trans-abdominal, with the ultrasound probe gliding gently across the surface of your abdomen.
However, if the pregnancy is in its earliest stage, or in case there is a concern over possible ectopic pregnancy, a trans-vaginal scan might be necessary in order to provide the best results. Both methods are entirely free of pain or discomfort, but please do let us know if you have any concerns or questions with regards to either method.

Nuchal NT Scan
A nuchal scan, or nuchal translucency (NT) scan, is often used as a screening test mainly for Down’s syndrome, as well as Edward’s and Patau’s syndromes and a number of major foetal abnormalities. The risk of Down’s syndrome and certain other abnormalities increases with the mother’s age.
Our team holds Fetal Medicine Foundation licence for 12 week Nuchal scan
4
What is nuchal translucency (NT)?
Nuchal translucency is a collection of fluid under the skin at the back of your baby’s neck. It is measured using ultrasound in order to evaluate risk of a Down’s syndrome. All babies have some fluid at the back of their neck, but those with Down’s syndrome will have an increased amount.

Anatomy scan is a very detailed examination where special attention is given to certain organs or features in order to detect any anomalies.

It is performed between weeks 24-40 of the pregnancy and it is not normally offered on NHS.

This is an external, transabdonimal scan, where the ultrasound probe gently glides over your abdomen. It is completely painless and safe for you and your baby.

What will the scan examine?
When measuring fetal size we will use growth charts and plot baby’s size against the number of weeks in order to assess growth and development.
This will also provide us with an estimated fetal weight at birth.
Sometimes we will need to perform more detailed examination and check baby’s limbs, fluid spaces within the head, as well as perform various Doppler measurements to verify the sufficiency in blood flow.

Baby Growth and Doppler Scan
Our 4D Growth with Doppler package is performed anytime between weeks 24 and 38 of pregnancy. Growth or Well being scan will assess your baby’s development and will measure the head, abdomen and limbs, in particular. This helps us estimate your baby’s weight at birth.
We will also look at the position of placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid and will assess baby’s movements.
On top of this, we will perform a Doppler scan. It measures the blood flow in different parts of your baby’s body, such as his umbilical cord, brain and heart. This helps to show whether the baby is getting all the oxygen and nutrients required via the placenta.
